The locking mechanism

Each external dial is attached to a slightly smaller internal dial containing a notch. Rotating the outer dials thus turns the internal dials. When the correct combination is in place, all the notches on the internal dials align, allowing the internal locking plate to slide out of the "teeth" on the safe's lid, and allowing the lid to be lifted.
